How do i stop my icing from being too sticky??

I am kneading black food colouring into white fondant icing and it just becomes too wet, so i put icing sugar on it to dry it up again but this seems to counteract the black coulouring and keep it grey/purple and is sticking to the work top when i try to roll it out! Am i doing this wrong? how can i make my icing jet black?
